Universities that equip their midwifery and health visiting students with the knowledge and skills to support breastfeeding mothers, in line with the Baby Friendly best practice standards, can apply to be assessed and accredited as Baby Friendly.
Registration of Intent
All universities providing courses in midwifery and health visiting/public health nursing are encouraged to register their intention to implement the standards. The lead midwife and/or health visitor for education should complete the registration form.
The Certificate of Commitment
When a department has developed a curriculum that covers the best practice standards, it may apply for a Certificate of Commitment. The Certificate recognises that the department will be ready for full assessment within 24 months. It is signed by the vice chancellor and the lead midwife and/or health visitor for education.
Assessment and accreditation
When a department has educated a cohort of students according to the approved curriculum, it may apply to be assessed for accreditation. In order to maintain accreditation, universities will be re-assessed after three years and then at increasing intervals thereafter.
