It can be difficult to decide which milk to feed to your baby. The Baby Friendly Initiative has produced a guide to the different types of milk available to help you decide.
An important point to note is that there is no independent evidence to suggest that any company’s milk is better for your baby. Therefore, it is fine to pick the cheapest if that is what you want to do. However, there is a difference between the types of milk on the market (e.g. first milk, follow-on milk etc) and your baby could become ill if you feed him with a milk intended for older babies. Therefore, always read the tins very carefully.
Hospital stays are very short, so do make sure that you are confident with making up feeds and sterilising feeding equipment before you go home. Staff should offer to go through this with you, but do ask if you have any concerns. If feeds are made up incorrectly it can result in your baby becoming ill, so it is crucial that you know how to make up feeds as safely as possible.
