Aims of the workshop

1. To equip participants to carry out an effective audit of practice in their facility against the Baby Friendly Initiative best practice standards.

2. To provide participants with an overview of the Baby Friendly Initiative audit tool.

Expected learning outcomes

At the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

1. Describe the purpose of audit and some of its uses in supporting the achievement and maintenance of high standards of practice in relation to breastfeeding.

2. List the sorts of materials which may be required to enable an effective audit to be carried out of practices to support breastfeeding.

3. List the people who should be interviewed, according to which practices are being audited.

4. Describe the process for selecting interviewees using random number tables.

5. Explain how the wording of interview questions affects the information obtained.

6. Demonstrate how to conduct effective interviews of both mothers and staff using an appropriate introduction and suitably phrased questions.

7. Describe a basic scoring technique for showing results as percentages.

8. Explain why and how some responses may need to be excluded from the scoring procedure.

9. Describe effective ways of presenting and disseminating audit results.

10. Describe how audit results may be interpreted and used to plan appropriate action.

11. Explain the link between effective audit and the design and delivery of in-house education.

12. Describe how the Baby Friendly Initiative audit tool can assist health care staff to audit their practices in support of breastfeeding.
