Please note, this document refers to the older Baby Friendly standards and you may find the more up to date action plans and transition guidance more useful for your situation.

This document (2005) outlines the process of achieving Baby Friendly accreditation across the relevant services within a local authority area, shows how the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative can best support the implementation of best practice and gives guidance on the costs involved.

By adopting a coordinated approach at local authority level, those responsible for increasing breastfeeding rates will be able to ensure a consistency of approach, minimise the impact on the services involved, employ a logistically effective strategy and take advantage of cost savings associated with larger scale implementation.
