This document is intended to help health-care facilities to produce an effective breastfeeding policy which covers all the Baby Friendly Initiative best practice standards and so meets the accreditation requirements for Step 1/Point 1.
This document can be used to support the development of a new breastfeeding policy, to update an existing policy or to decide whether a policy meets all the standards for Baby Friendly accreditation. If a new policy is being written, it is suggested that the sample policy and guidance notes be studied before beginning the first draft.
