SGI-UK is a member of Soka Gakkai International (SGI), a Buddhist association with more than 12 million members in 190 countries and territories worldwide. For SGI members, Buddhism is a practical philosophy of individual empowerment and inner transformation that enables people to develop themselves and take responsibility for their lives.
As lay believers and "engaged Buddhists", SGI members strive in their everyday lives to develop the ability to live with confidence, to create value in any circumstances and to contribute to the well-being of friends, family and community. The promotion of peace, culture and education is central to SGI's activities.
Under the leadership of its president, Daisaku Ikeda, SGI (founded in 1975) is an NGO with consultative status with several UN agencies (UNESCO and UNHCR among others) and is taking on an active role in world affairs, building bridges through dialogue and cultural exchange.
SGI-UK has had a long relationship with UNICEF UK, raising awareness of the organisation's work through cultural events such as Painting a World of Friendship – an exhibition of children's art from around the world, and fundraising through gala concerts and local community activities.
