In Kenya 700,000 children from nomadic communities are missing out on primary school education. Nomadic children face barriers to education as their lifestyle requires their families to move around remote areas with their animals to seek new pasture and water. Girls in particular do not have the opportunity to receive an education, with less than 40% of nomadic girls in school.
The solution
Mobile schools, which literally move around with the community, provide an innovative solution to ensure these children don’t miss out on their right to an education and yet maintain their nomadic way of life.
What UNICEF is doing
UNICEF aims to provide mobile schools and semi-permanent schools for over 18,000 children, focusing on seven districts in northern Kenya with the worst primary school enrolment rates. The majority of these children will be going to school for the first time. Each school has one teacher who receives training and is equipped with educational supplies. The community is closely involved to highlight the importance of education.
Help us achieve this goal
£5,679 could set up one mobile school, providing tents, a pack animal, solar lamps, text books and a portable blackboard, benefiting on average 110 children and their families.
