Seven-year-old UNICEF fundraiser Charlie Simpson has been awarded the title of ‘Most Popular Fundraiser’ by online fundraising website JustGiving, after raising more than £200,000 for UNICEF’s Haiti earthquake appeal.

The JustGiving Awards 2011, held at the Emirates Stadium in London on 10 February, celebrate the inspiring individuals and charities who have given their time, effort and creativity to raise money for worthwhile causes over the last year.

After hearing about the devastation in Haiti caused by the 2010 earthquake, Charlie felt compelled to help. He decided to cycle around his local park to raise awareness and funds for UNICEF’s work helping children and families affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

Charlie’s bike ride subsequently became an international phenomenon, with photos and footage shown around the world, leading to Charlie receiving over 9,265 individual donations from members of the public.

On being presented with his award Charlie said: "Thank you to all the people who voted for me. I am so happy!" Michael Newsome, Director of Individual Giving at UNICEF UK, added: "The dramatic destruction caused by the January 2010 Haiti earthquake shattered the lives of millions of children and continues to cause great suffering to countless others. But with the support of Charlie and fundraisers like him, UNICEF will continue to respond to the needs of the most vulnerable across the country. The £200,000 Charlie raised has helped to save the lives of children right across Haiti. We all congratulate him on his well deserved award."

More than 220,000 people lost their lives and 300,000 were injured when they were caught in the rubble caused by the Haitian earthquake. UNICEF is continuing to work with partners to rebuild Haiti and aid its recovery.
