A group of blogging mums (as well as a few blogging dads) visited UNICEF UK’s offices on Monday to take part in a special event to raise awareness and money for life-saving tetanus vaccines for UNICEF.
The blogging parents were challenged to raise the profile of the Pampers Big Kiss initiative, which triggers a donation from Pampers to UNICEF for the cost of one vaccine to protect against maternal and newborn tetanus every time someone sends a ‘virtual kiss’ by clicking on a link on the Pampers Village website.
But before they were set their challenge, the blogging parents heard from members of UNICEF UK staff on the organisation’s life-saving work in the field – and in particular, how Pampers is helping UNICEF protect women and children from tetanus. They were also given tips on fundraising and communications.
Mummy blogger ‘Rosie Scribble’, who visited Cameroon with Pampers and UNICEF in August to witness the progress of the ‘1 pack = 1 life-saving vaccine’ campaign, talked to the group about her experiences in the country. And former Spice Girl Melanie C, who fronts the Pampers Big Kiss campaign, was also present to offer encouragement to the bloggers.
Hazel Larkin, 37, who has two children aged 6 and 8 and blogs at ladyscribbles.wordpress.com, said: “It’s been a fantastic day. I’ve got a lot of ideas and I’m very inspired. I’ve met some wonderful people and found out things that I didn’t know about the work UNICEF does in the developing world.”
Yuri Pires, a 30-year-old father of two young children who blogs at urbanvox.net, says the bloggers had loads of ideas for promoting the initiative online. “The internet is the best, fastest way to get the campaign out there and the easiest way to raise, not just awareness, but funds as well.”
Pampers and UNICEF joined forces in 2006 to help raise funds for vaccines to protect women and their babies against maternal and newborn tetanus. Now in its fifth year, the partnership has expanded across the globe reaching 21 countries in two continents and is helping to protect 100 million women and their babies.
For every Pampers product purchased across October, November and December 2010 with the ‘1 pack = 1 life-saving vaccine’ logo, Pampers will donate the cost of one tetanus vaccine to UNICEF. You can also trigger a donation by sending a ‘virtual kiss’ on the Pampers Village website.
