On 5 September 2011, a team of 30 Barclays lawyers and 18 of their suppliers successfully completed a five day, 450 mile cycle journey from Edinburgh to London in aid of UNICEF UK, raising £130,000 for UNICEF's measles immunisation work across Africa.
These funds will be matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, raising the total to £260,000 and ensuring that thousands of children will be immunised against measles, a leading killer of youngsters in the developing world.
Greeting the Wheels for Change team on their arrival at London’s Piccadilly Circus, UNICEF UK Ambassador Duncan Bannatyne commented: "Well done to the Wheels for Change cyclists whose amazing challenge has raised over £260,000 for UNICEF's vital measles immunisation programme. Everyone can help support UNICEF, by doing something equally amazing but less strenuous, by taking part in the next Step into the Night walk in London on the 21st September."
Shane Hawkins, Chief of Staff for Barclays Retail and Business Banking legal team, and one of 'Wheels for Change' leaders added: "Barclays has a strong and successful partnership with UNICEF and we decided we wanted to do something more for the charity. We have had an amazing journey."
On the 21st September 2011 the third Annual Barclays ‘Step into the Night’ sponsored 10 km walk will take place London, raising further vital funds for UNICEF’s work for children globally. For information on how to take part visit www.unicef.org.uk/step
