Over the past year, the children and communities of Haiti have faced overwhelming challenges, ranging from the devastating earthquake that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives, to a cholera outbreak, to floods and other disasters.
Throughout, UNICEF’s priority has remained constant – the protection of children’s rights. Today, despite extreme difficulties, more children are being immunised, more children are being reunited with their families, and more children are attending school again.
Nonetheless, beyond the immediate devastation, there is a silent emergency. Before the earthquake, Haiti’s children lived in a country at a standstill, with the nation off track for nearly all targets set under the Millennium Development Goals. However, working together to overcome obstacles, progress is possible – through promoting children’s rights we can help transform their lives and communities now and in the future.
