The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) is a vast country with immense economic resources. However, it has been at the centre of what is often called 'Africa's World War', a five-year conflict which drew in five neighbouring countries. This has left the DR Congo in the grip of a humanitarian crisis, with people in the east of the country living in terror of marauding militias.

Over a million women and children remain displaced by conflict throughout the country. While some people have been able to return to their homes, others have become displaced over again by fresh violence. Children are especially affected by disease, malnutrition, violence, separation from their families and limited access to education.
