The Muslim-majority state of Pakistan was created from the partition of the Indian sub-continent in 1947. Since then, it has faced both domestic upheaval and regional confrontation.

In 2010, severe flooding affected over 20 million people in Pakistan, around half of them children. It was a humanitarian disaster of unprecedented scale, affecting nore people than the 2004 tsunami, Haiti earthquake and previous Pakistan earthquake combined. It is likely to take the country years to recover and reconstruct.

Up to 2.5 million children were also affected by new monsoon floods in southern Pakistan in 2011.
