Since the end of World War II, the Philippines has gone from being one of the richest countries in Asia to one of the poorest. A long-running conflict in the south, regular natural disasters and high population growth have all contributed to this trend.

The rich/poor divide is particularly pronounced. There is a small, wealthy upper class but over a third of the population lives below the poverty line, often in slums or on the streets.

In the Philippines, UNICEF works to keep children in school, protect children after natural disasters, promote children's rights and ensure that their voices are heard.
