Dear Prime Minister and Secretary of State for International Development

I am contacting you to request bold and urgent action in the Government’s forthcoming strategy to tackle HIV and AIDS, including £2.5bn to be committed to tackling AIDS over the next three years. This is needed for the UK to play its part in keeping the the promise of Universal Access to HIV Prevention, Treatment, Care and Support by 2010.

You have both spoken passionately about keeping promises in tackling poverty and fighting disease, but now is the time when your leadership and action is most needed.

To keep the promise of Universal Access by 2010, please ensure that the new AIDS Strategy includes:

• A funding commitment of £2.5bn over three years to tackle AIDS.
  • Strong measures to increase access to affordable generic medicines, including
     tackling trade barriers and launching a ‘patent pool’ for essential medicines.
  • Action to address the global health worker shortage and provide long-term
     investment in health systems.

I hope that you will take these actions, and truly  support communities affected by HIV and AIDS across the world.
