Fund the Global Fund to Keep Promises and Save Lives

Dear Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for International Development

This September the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria will host a Replenishment Conference. At the Conference donors will be asked to give more money to support the Fund’s work to fight three diseases which kill almost 6 million people each year.

The Conference will be the new Government’s first chance to demonstrate its commitment to achieve the promise of Universal Access to HIV Prevention, Treatment, Care and Support by 2010. You will also be able to fulfil the pledge made at the 2007 G8 Summit to provide increased long-term funding for an enlarged Global Fund.

Please keep these promises by making a three year funding commitment of at least £700 million ($1.43bn) at the Replenishment Conference in September. Providing this amount would ensure that the UK keeps up its share of funding as the Global Fund grows to meet its targets. This will help to save millions of lives.

I see this as the new Government’s first big test in the fight against HIV and AIDS, and an opportunity to support the growth of an aid mechanism that has already saved the lives of almost 2 million people. I will be watching to see if you pass it.
