Write to your MP about the need for care for victims of trafficking

UNICEF UK is pleased that the Government has now introduced legislation that makes it illegal to traffick for all purposes.

However, if the Government is serious about tackling trafficking, it must now sign up to the European Convention on Action Against Trafficking in Human Beings, formally opened for signature at the Council of Europe’s Summit of Heads State and Government in May 2005.

The trafficking of children is a global problem and it cannot be solved just by making the act illegal.  UNICEF UK has been calling for centrally funded care for trafficked children through the provision of safe houses, counselling and education. UNICEF UK wants this to be mandatory whether the victim participates in the prosecution process or not.

The Council of Europe’s Convention Against Trafficking would oblige the UK to meet minimum binding standards for the protection and support of trafficked people and UNICEF UK therefore strongly believes the UK should sign up to it.

Your Member of Parliament (MP) can play a vital role by urging the Government to sign up to the new European Convention on Action Against Trafficking in Human Beings.

Please help UNICEF UK lobby for care for trafficked children by sending a letter by fax or email to your MP at the House of Commons, asking for his or her help.

You may be able to send a lobbying message by either email or printed letter.
