Breastfeeding provides babies with the best start in life and all the nutrients they need for the first six months of their lives. Babies who are fed in this way are less likely to suffer a range of serious illnesses during infancy and childhood. However, according to a Department of Health survey, nine out of ten new mothers who stopped breastfeeding before their baby was six weeks old would have liked to have continued for longer. The launch of the Breastfeeding Manifesto A Breastfeeding Manifesto has been produced which is supported by over thirty organisations including UNICEF UK, the Royal Colleges of Nursing and Midwives, Best Beginnings and the National Childbirth Trust. It sets out seven key objectives to improve infant feeding practice and to empower women to breastfeed for as long as they choose.
