Emergency alert (489k)

A series of overlapping crises since August 2008 has led to the internal displacement of hundreds of thousands of Pakistanis in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.

Conflict between militants and government forces in areas of the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) has forced millions of people from their homes. Although people have started to return to their home towns, more than 1.3 million remain displaced.

The conflict has rendered many areas off limits for humanitarian operations and has severely affected services, especially for children, in a historically impoverished and underserved region. For the people remaining in camps or host communities, the situation since their arrival has been compounded by harsh summer temperatures and the arrival of the monsoon season. These people remain in urgent need of safe water, clothing, food, shelter, health care and protection.

UNICEF’s response

UNICEF has been working in Pakistan for over 60 years and has been able to respond quickly to support the government in meeting the needs of children and their families. Working with our partners, we have been able to provide emergency relief, including health and nutrition, water and sanitation, education and child protection services to thousands of internally displaced people in camps in safe and accessible areas.

We are bringing water, sanitation and hygiene to thousands of displaced families in camps, rapidly constructing latrines and bathing facilities to help manage the spread of infection and disease, and helping the most vulnerable access basic health and nutrition services throughout the affected areas.

We are also establishing 'child friendly spaces' in camps, to assist with the identification of unaccompanied children and help reunite them with their families. We are giving displaced children access to education in the camps and providing all necessary school supplies.

UNICEF is urgently appealing for an additional £13.2 million to respond to this continuing humanitarian crisis. Please offer your support today.
