On 12 January a devastating earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck Haiti. Thousands of children were killed and injured. Two months on children have improved access to clean water, shelter and medical help. But sadly many children in Haiti are still being denied their basic rights.
Our goal now is to ensure that the rights of children in Haiti are protected for the long-term. This means:
- preventing and responding to the increased threat of under-nutrition in children
- ensuring children can go to school
- protecting children from violence, exploitation and abuse.
UNICEF has been present in Haiti for 60 years and we were there when the earthquake happened. Since then we have been working on the ground providing clean water and preventing the spread of disease. We have saved many lives, but we still have a great deal of work to do to help rebuild the lives of children in Haiti.
Haiti was already one of the poorest countries in the world and is struggling to recover from years of violence, insecurity and massive natural disasters. More than half of the country’s 9.6 million inhabitants are under 21 years of age. This is an enormous and challenging project but we are committed to upholding the rights of children in Haiti for as long as they need us.
Your donation will go to the Haiti Earthquake Children’s Appeal to support children affected by the recent earthquake in Haiti.
If the funds raised exceed UNICEF’s funding requirements for this emergency‚ the money will go to UNICEF’s Children’s Emergency Fund.
