UNICEF is sending emergency supplies from the warehouse in Copenhagen to Algeria today, following the earthquake that hit near the town of Boumerdes on May 21st 2003. A very heavy earthquake hit Northern Algeria on May 21st 2003. The provinces most affected are Boumerdes, Algiers, Tizi Ouzou and Bouira, with the epicentre located about 60km east of Algeria, near the town of Boumerdes.

Official sources confirmed today that 1,200 people were killed and more than 5,000 injured. The death toll may increase still as many people are still missing. Searches are ongoing.

Many buildings have been damaged and some have been completely destroyed. Schools and hospitals have also been affected and UNICEF is particularly concerned aabout the provision of health services becoming increasingly difficult. The partial destruction of one of the city's main hospital...
