On Monday 25 July, Martin Bell travelled from Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, to El Fasher. Here he visited Abu Shouk Camp, one of the largest camps in Darfur. The total population of the camp is around 57,000 people yet the camp occupies an area of only 2.55 square kilometres, making it one of the most densely populated places in the world.

UNICEF has built 194 classrooms in the camps and rehabilitated many more. In the area of child protection, UNICEF is supporting 45 child-friendly spaces in the camps and has trained Africa Union civilian police on child protection issues. UNICEF delivers 800,000 litres of water to Abu Shouk each day and operates 27 hand-pumps, six water tankers and five motorised pumps. UNICEF has also supplied 60,000 chemically treated mosquito nets.
