Blackthorns Primary School in Lindfield has raised over £250 for ‘Keep it Up for Soccer Aid’, a fundraising initiative which has swept the nation in the run up to Soccer Aid on ITV on 6 June 2010.

Soccer Aid began in 2006 as the brainwave of UNICEF Ambassador Robbie Williams and all funds raised go to support UNICEF’s crucial work with children worldwide. UNICEF works with the most vulnerable children around the world to deliver health care, nutrition, education and protection to help children survive and thrive.

To ‘Keep it Up for Soccer Aid’, Amy Hurn, Teaching Assistant, organised the event at Blackthorns where the pupils wore football kits to school for the day and did ‘keepy uppys’ and football circuits in a special afternoon of Soccer Aid activities.  Pupils in Years 5 and 6 have also produced poems and artwork to raise awareness of Soccer Aid as part of their learning.  The afternoon was filmed by ITV news with pupils interviewed about their fundraising.

Amy Hurn said: “Blackthorns Primary School works with UNICEF in the long term, as part of UNICEF’s Right Respecting Schools Awards scheme. All the children and staff were very keen to get involved with Soccer Aid because it’s a fantastic way to combine football, fun and healthy living to raise money for children worldwide.  Our curriculum ensures that children at Blackthorns have a good understanding of global issues and we will follow up this wonderful event with feedback from UNICEF on how the money raised today will be spent on the projects targeted by Soccer Aid.”

Michael Newsome, Director of Fundraising at UNICEF UK said: “Blackthorns Primary School truly rose to the challenge because the whole school was involved, showing that anyone and everyone can grab a ball and have fun whilst getting sponsored to make a lasting change to children’s lives. We are extremely grateful to the school for their amazing feat of raising £250 in one afternoon and would encourage other schools to check out how much fun they had on the Soccer Aid website. Tune in to ITV 1 on 6 June so see what a huge difference these activities make.”
