Day one
Visit to a permanent children’s centre
Later on day one Björk visited the first permanent children’s centre to be built in the region, a joint project between UNICEF and the Institute of Migration.
The building is earthquake-proof with a steel structure. It is also child-friendly and has facilities which include disabled access and separate boys and girls toilets - an important cultural consideration in Muslim countries.
Fifty children are currently served by the centre. The children enjoy both traditional and modern dance lessons and sports, including badminton and football. As more homes are rebuilt in the area, more children will come to make use of the Centre.
Björk was honoured with a demonstration of some traditional Acehnese dance by the girls at the centre.
