Day two

UNICEF Building Back Better

UNICEF is funding a major $90 million project building permanent schools in Banda Aceh which UNICEF pledges to ‘Build Back Better’, making the schools stronger and safer than before, with clean water and sanitation facilities.

The Head teacher at the temporary school in Min Lampuuk expressed his wish to Björk that his school become permanent. At the moment the region is still in a state of transition as so many homes were destroyed and there aren’t enough houses for families to live in (although 700 new homes are currently being built close by). The school currently supports 35 students and once this number reaches 90, when more families move back into the area, UNICEF will build a permanent school.

UNICEF supplied this water bladder to the school at Min Lampuuk and refills it with clean water every few days. UNICEF water bladders like this are to be seen all over the region, keeping communities sustained with clean water while their homes and infrastructures are rebuilt.
