Day two

Children's Centre Lho'nga, Greater Aceh

Björk then visited a Children’s Centre in Lho’nga, Greater Aceh. The centre was built by Lambrineu a Dutch NGO. UNICEF provides and supports much of the childcare activities.

The region was hit heavily by the tsunami and many of the children at the centre have lost their homes and members of their families. The centre provides continuity and stability to young lives that have experienced turbulence. The children are able to play with each other here in a safe environment.

On the day that Björk visited the centre, the children were mostly aged under 5 years old and were watching a puppet show. Often simple messages are conveyed to children through the shows and this is even more important to children who may have lost one or both parents or are living in temporary homes. In the photo above, Björk is watching a puppet show teaching children not to fight with their friends.

The centre invited Björk to sing a to the children and she sang a traditional children’s song in Icelandic about animals and the different noises they make.
