Day two

Visit to a fishing village

Björk then visited an area of Banda Aceh that was devastated by the tsunami. A once vibrant fishing village where 2000 people lived and worked. Only 15 people survived the waves.

Björk saw a house with a boat its roof (see picture opposite), stranded by the waves when they receded.

Next to the house was a small tent with a woman and a child sitting outside. The woman was drying small fish that she sells to make a small amount of money.

She lives in the tent with six children, five of her own and one child belonging to her sister who died in the disaster. Her husband and mother also died in the tsunami and now they all live in the one room tent while she is waiting for the government to rebuild her house.

Although poor, the woman was hospitable and generous and asked Björk if she could get her something to eat or drink.
