In 2010, UNICEF is asking schools around the country to take part in ‘Day for Change’.
Day for Change is a great opportunity for your students to learn about another country, and fundraise for UNICEF’s work. In 2010, schools will support Mozambique, and pick a theme that they would like to support: education, or water and sanitation.
By taking part in Day for Change 2010 and fundraising for UNICEF, your school can make a very real difference to the children of Mozambique.
Putting on your very own Day for Change couldn’t be easier: schools that register with us will receive a resource pack full of ideas, case studies, fundraising plans, posters, lesson plans, assembly ideas, stickers and lots more. Everything you need to hold a really successful Day for Change fundraiser!
Nearly half of the population of Mozambique is under 18, and 75% of the population lives below the poverty line ($1.25 / day). UNICEF is working hard to help improve the lives of children in Mozambique, but we need your help.
Education
Although 99% of children in Mozambique are enrolled in primary school, the quality of the education is still very poor. There is a massive shortage of classrooms; teachers; desks and school materials, and many teachers have to cope with up to 70 children in their classes and very limited supplies. UNICEF’s Child Friendly School programme aims to improve the quality of education ensuring that the teaching and learning environment in each school is inclusive, child friendly and safe.
Child Survival
Every day in Mozambique, about 450 children under five die because of preventable and treatable diseases, such as malaria, AIDS-related illnesses and diarrhoea. Lots of parents simply don’t know about basic health care, and what limited health services there are lack supplies, staff and adequate training. UNICEF is working to help child survival trying to reach every single child and mother across the country with a few priority things, such as providing vaccinations & malaria nets, and improving hygiene practices. These steps are simple but have a big impact.
Children at your school can learn about these issues and we can then ensure that the money you raise will make a real difference to the children of Mozambique.
Registering your school and taking part in Day for Change couldn’t be easier. Simply contact us using one of the methods below and say, ‘we want to be part of Day for Change 09/10'.
