Soroptimist International, a worldwide organisation for women in management and the professions, is a global voice for women. Soroptimists seek to raise awareness, advocate for change and take action on global issues affecting us all.
Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Ireland (SIGBI) has very generously supported a number of UNICEF appeals over the years. Most recently, Soroptimist International supported our “Give Hope to The Children of Pakistan Appeal”. Clubs around the country raised funds for School-in-a-box kits and the longer term education work in the country. This appeal raised over £37,000, many thanks to everybody involved.
In 2008 Soroptimists in the UK will be supporting our Born Free Appeal which focuses on the prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV.
Almost every minute of every day a baby is born with HIV passed on by their mother during pregnancy, labour or delivery. In 2007 alone, nearly 400,000 babies were born with HIV. Without treatment, most are unlikely to live to see their second birthday. With the help of Soroptimist International we can change this and ensure that testing, medicine and the necessary counselling is available to many more pregnant women.
Just £84 pays for testing, support and medicine for mum and baby.
Learn more about prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV by watching some powerful films put together by Photographer Gideon Mendel taken on a recent trip to Lesotho.
Field trip to The Gambia
In November 2007, UNICEF/UKPAC liaison Jane Hastings visited The Gambia on a UNICEF field trip to see first hand the devastating effects HIV is having on this small West African Country. In particular, Jane visited prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV projects and met women and children who were benefiting from UNICEF’s intervention.
