In the final episode of The Speaker, BBC2’s search for Britain’s best young public speaker, the three finalists were challenged to deliver a speech addressing the topic:
why do children’s rights matter?

To gain the knowledge and experience they needed to answer this question, Kay Kay, Duncan and Irene went with UNICEF on a fact-finding mission to Malawi in Africa. There they visited UNICEF-supported projects including a primary school and an HIV treatment centre, and spoke to young people about their experiences.

The visit gave them the opportunity to see for themselves the difference that is made when children’s rights, such as the right to an education, the right to clean water, and the right to survival, are met.
