DESCRIPTION :
Help protect a baby’s right to be healthy and born free from HIV.
In the developing world, women and girls are at particular risk of contracting HIV, both because of their physiology and because of power imbalances in their relationships with men and boys. Preventing new infections is the first line of defence against HIV, but what can we do to protect the next generation when a pregnant women finds out she has HIV?
With the right medicines and care, the chances of a woman passing on the HIV virus to her baby during pregnancy or birth are significantly reduced. UNICEF has collaborated with the World Health Organisation to produce this Mother and Baby Pack, which contains all of the medicines needed to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV, in a handy kit split into three sections, for antenatal, during delivery and post-birth use.
“When the nurse told me Samuel was born free from HIV, it was the happiest day of my life. I was so excited, I couldn’t sleep.”
- Mary Wasike, mother of Samuel, who was born free from HIV
