Headteacher Barbara Dobson, and Deputyhead Gail Cheers said that Hampshire's Rights, Respect and Responsibility (RRR) work appealed to them as a natural development to their pastoral/holistic approach. Once they began to implement it they decided to participate in the Rights Respecting School Award pilot.
She feels that benefits of being part of Rights Respecting School Award are:
-
Pupils see that the care the school provides has the structure of the UNCRC behind it
- Adults are helped to think hard about what they are doing, then draw up an Action plan.
Recognising that some teachers initially had some unease about RRR the staff was first introduced to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). They related it to their own school, doing class charters of rights and responsibilities. Then teachers used the ‘For Every Child’ book and UNICEF’s ‘Wants and needs’ cards with their pupils which they saw as central to introducing the UNCRC. Also, they have often used assemblies this year to introduce aspects of RRR.
