This 450 pupil primary school in Northern Ireland has achieved Level 1 status of the Rights Respecting School Award.
Headteacher Dr Anne Murray explains, “Respecting rights is part of the basic premise of setting up an integrated school, so a lot of the standards for the Award were already in place. We have achieved several awards and find them useful for helping schools to look at themselves.
“Going for the Award has led to heightened awareness of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and for our pupils it has reinforced that what the school does is for them. It also makes them aware that they should not misuse their talents. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child also enhances children’s global awareness.”
The school has circle time every week when the class council gets ideas to take to the School Council. One of the initiatives suggested by the School Council was a chess club.
