Through campaigning, you can change the world. We asked experienced young campaigner Thomas Burke to explain how.
One - (check your facts. Then) Get Angry! The first thing you need to do is get angry. Choose an issue which makes you really angry: Maybe you hate it that you don't have anywhere to skate. Maybe you are angry that your local community centre is going to be shut down.
Maybe the issue which makes you REALLY angry is a global one - from child exploitation to the use of landmines - so you may think that it will be more difficult to make a difference. But those of us in the UK have a special responsibility to help those who cannot speak out. We need to make sure OUR government is taking action. What we do can really help others.
Before you do anything - check your facts. Are you 100% certain that the local community centre is shutting down? Do not trust everything you read in the newspaper.
Only campaign on something you are truly passionate about. If you don't care that much it will show and the campaign will not work. You have to be committed.
Two -Time to get a Team!
No campaign is going to work if it is run by one person. You need to get a group of like minded people together to campaign on this issue.
The best way to do this is to look at groups that already exist. If there is no group in your area then set one up! Get your mates who are interested together and decide to meet at a certain time and place every week - ask your school/college if you can use one of their rooms. See who else is interested.
Three - Research!
This is possibly the most boring aspect of the whole campaign but also the most important. If you are going to launch a campaign then you need to know why you are campaigning and what you want to achieve.
You need to research the problem - why does it make you angry? Be clear why this is a problem! It is not good enough to say "It's not fair".
Most importantly What is the solution? If the problem is that there's not enough for young people to do in the area then a possible solution is an improved youth centre. If the problem is that millions of children and missing school around the world because they can't afford school fees then the solution is for governments to press for free education.
It is a good idea to focus your campaign on this one person. It could be the leader of your local council or the Prime Minister. it depends on the issue. They are your target. Remember: They have been elected to represent you!
Four - the fun begins
Now you know what you want and who can make it happen, the real campaign can kick off. This is where you can get creative, go a little mad and try and change the world!
Firstly, write a letter to the person responsible demanding action. Be polite but firm. Layout the problem and why you think your solution is the best one. Ask to meet with them.
Secondly, get the issue in the public eye. Using the letter you sent to the council as a basis write one to your local paper's letters page. Make it clear what you are demanding and why you want it.
Here are a few ideas. You will probably have a lot more of your own to add;
- Petition
- Start a postcard campaign
- Email Madness
- Hold a public meeting
- Have a public demonstration
- Go to open meetings
- Spread the word
The most important thing it to get the event into the local press. There is no pointing having the most creative, fun and colourful demonstration or action if no one knows about it!
