Young people ‘take over’ UNICEF UK!

We interviewed the Chief Executive David Bull, about his experience generally and about UNICEF and we started to put together a small presentation on that.

We had lots of chats with David, Edward (Head of Education) and Alice (our guide for the day) ending up in a meeting to evaluate the day focusing on how UNICEF could help us in finding different ways of improving the world and our school in particular, how to make it a Rights Respecting School. This was very interesting because we all came up with different ideas and suggested outcomes. It also was unusual in that Mr Jones, our teacher, was not allowed to help us or contribute to our decisions and we could really decide what was going to happen on that day. We must have been pretty motivated because we stayed on working well after the time we were supposed to leave.

Throughout the day many interesting things happened and we met many different people, and learnt a lot about UNICEF. We now understand that UNICEF is a very busy charity and we understand the role David Bull plays as its Executive Director and really have seen how a charitable company is run and the complicated, huge organisation behind it all.

It was a very joyful and enjoyable experience. We learnt how to get in touch with teenagers all over the world and about the poverty that exists in different countries. We were lucky to be told many stories by Mr. Bull about the experiences he has had when visiting countries supported by UNICEF. The whole day was fun and very educational. We wouldn’t change a thing, as everything went according to plan and we would recommend that other schools try to become a Rights Respecting School and take more interest in organisations like UNICEF, because it really does make the world and schools better places (there’s always room for improvement).

We thank UNICEF for letting us have the chance to go there and do what we did. We hope we can repay UNICEF by helping turn our school into a Rights Respecting School and telling Villiers High School students about the great work that UNICEF does.
