Opportunity for young people aged 18-24
Do you care about issues affecting young people in the UK and globally? Do you get really mad when you hear about global injustice or rights violations? And do you really care about health issues – like HIV?
You could join a group to influence what UNICEF UK has to say about HIV, and be supported to take some serious action on change for children.
The Campaign
In 2005 UNICEF launched a global campaign on HIV and AIDS and children. The next phase of the campaign in the UK will focus on prevention – that means talking about stigma, discrimination, access to the right information and services young people need, as well as; education, education, education.
So the problem...
Did you know that every minute of every day, one child dies and four children lose a parent because of AIDS-related illness? HIV and AIDS are issues that affect us all. Globally, there are around 33 million people living with HIV. In the UK around 73,000 people are living with HIV. And there are rising rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among young people. Worryingly, young people in the UK don’t think they’re getting the sex and relationships education (SRE) they need – 40 per cent of young people aged 11-18 think their SRE was either poor or very poor.
Be part of the solution
We are putting together a group of young people aged 18-24 – this group will advise us and help shape our campaign, especially helping us reach out to more young people in the UK. We want you to get out there and active – to connect with other young people and inspire them to learn more and take action. You’ll come up with the astonishing ideas and we’ll support you to make them happen.
This is a voluntary position and UNICEF UK would cover all your travel, food and accommodation costs to attend any UNICEF organised meetings. We’ll book everything for you too.
The group will work together for about a year and meet face-to-face a few times. In between those times we’ll keep in touch online and on the phone. We hope to have our first residential meeting on 4-6 April 2008.
