On 7 March 2019 Liverpool became the sixth city to join the Child Friendly Cities & Communities programme and the first in the North West of England. The new partnership was launched with 70 young people invited to the Council Chamber to put their questions to Unicef UK and local politicians, 40 primary school children taking part in a special World Book Day storytelling session with local children’s author Alan Gibbons, and the raising of the Child Friendly Cities & Communities flag over Liverpool Town Hall. Over the next three-to-five-years the CFC team will be working across the city – with local politicians, council staff, fire, police and health services, universities, community organisations and children and young people – to support Liverpool to put children’s rights into practice. If at the end of that time Liverpool can demonstrate real change for local children and young people they’ll be recognised as a Unicef Child Friendly City. Images by Gareth Jones
