GIFT to me is about solidarity. We're a group of like-minded women who care. We pool our investments and we pull together to make a real and lasting difference to the lives of vulnerable girls all over the world. Together, we are stronger.
Why invest in girls?
Investing in girls leads to increased prosperity and better health for girls, for families, for communities, and for entire nations. It has an extraordinary effect on economic growth.
Girls’ education is the most consistent driver of global development. An educated girl is more likely to get a job and earn a higher wage, and her nation’s economy is likely to benefit as a result. Healthy and educated young women are less likely to die in childbirth, more likely to send their children to school, and better able to protect themselves and their children from malnutrition, HIV and AIDS, trafficking and sexual exploitation.
Fifteen-year-old Ethiopian refugee Khayriyya is a keen student at a Unicef-supported school in Sudan. While getting an education and finding work is challenging for so many young people in Sudan, refugees are all too often last in line when it comes to jobs and opportunities.
“Many times my father has been faced with people asking him, “Why do you keep paying for your girl’s education? Girls are destined for marriage.’”
Having supportive parents counts for a lot in a country where child marriage is widespread, with young brides – some as young as 10 or 11 – rarely able to continue their education.
My ambition is to continue my studies, graduate and be a doctor.
I want to prove that if a girl has been well-educated and graduated she can do a lot. I want to continue and show them what I can do.
