The three stages of the
Rights Respecting Schools Award
There are three stages to becoming a Rights Respecting School.
Accreditation is achieved by an external assessment process, to provide evidence that the four RRSA standards have been met. Commitment to final assessment at Level 2 can take up to four years. Level 1 and Level 2 Awards are valid for three years, after which time schools must be re-assessed.
The first step is to register with us online. Once registered a school works through the three stages of the award.
Recognition of Commitment
The first step is the Recognition of Commitment (ROC). This stage is about showing that the school has a plan in place to become rights-respecting and that children and adults are working together to develop a whole-school rights respecting approach. The school must show that the headteacher and school leaders are committed to becoming a Rights Respecting School. To achieve their ROC, schools submit electronic evidence to show their progress.
Achieving a Recognition of Commitment takes between 3 to 6 months.

Level 1 is the second step of the Rights Respecting Schools Award. At this stage, the school implements an action plan and makes good progress towards embedding the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into its ethos and curriculum following the four RRSA standards. The school also plans how they will fully embed the Convention as they work towards Level 2.
To achieve accreditation, the school self-evaluates progress and when they believe they have met the standards, a Unicef UK representative will visit the school to assess progress. Following this, a written report is provided and, where the standards have been met, the school will be awarded a Level 1.
Achieving Level 1 takes a further 6 to 12 months (from achieving your ROC).
The Level 1 Award is valid for three years, after which time schools must be re-assessed.
Level 2 is the highest level of the Rights Respecting Schools Award. A school that achieves Level 2 has fully embedded the principles of the Convention into its ethos and curriculum. Schools must also be able to show how they will maintain these rights-based values and principles.
To achieve accreditation, the school self-evaluates progress and when they believe they have met the four RRSA standards and criteria at Level 2, an external assessment takes place. The Unicef UK representative will then write a report. At Level 2, a committee of experts (including headteachers and Unicef UK staff) decides whether to grant a Level 2 Award.
Achieving Level 2 takes an additional 12 to 24 months (from achieving your Level 1).
The Level 2 Award is valid for three years, after which time schools must be re-assessed.
