Working towards and applying for Bronze

Here are some suggested steps to start working towards Bronze: Rights Committed (you can also download the checklist on this page).

1. Inform the whole school community that the school is working on the RRSA

Including pupils, staff, parents and governors.

Read more about informing your whole school community, including some resources on how to do so, here.

2. Become familiar with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child

Take a look at our introducing the CRC webpage. You will find a Summary of the CRC, as well as the CRC in full.

Our Myths and Misconceptions about the CRC booklet is also really handy.

3. Get your pupil-led Steering Group in place

Read some guidance about setting up the Steering Group.

4a. Measure your starting point

Carry out the pupil questionnaires and staff and governor questionnaires so that you have an overview of the staff and pupils’ current knowledge and understanding of children’s rights and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

4b. Complete the School Questionnaire Summary spreadsheet

Use the pupil and staff and governor questionnaire results to do this. Find the School Questionnaire Summary here.

Please note, if you have used our online surveys to conduct your review, you need to request the results from our central team at rrsa@unicef.org.uk. We understand that, especially in small schools, you may have only a small number of staff completing the survey. In order to ensure that staff feel comfortable giving honest answers, we will not share a full summary of the staff and governor results with the school, but will give some top line figures only.

5. Review your school practice

Review your school practice against the Silver Outcome Descriptors for each of the three RRSA Strands.

“RAG rate” each descriptor and record in the RAG column of the Action Plan for Silver. Find some guidance and the Action Plan for Silver form here.

6. Complete the Action Plan for Silver

Use the “RAG rating” to prioritise your areas for development.

Use our Teaching and Learning Toolbox to help you identify actions to strengthen each Strand.

7. Complete the School Context Data form

The School Context Data form is not required as part of the accreditation process for Bronze: Rights Committed. However, please complete the form with information from the last full academic year if you haven’t already.

8. Contact your Professional Adviser

When you have completed the above steps, email your Professional Adviser.

Within the email:

  • Explain how you have informed the whole school community that the school is working on the RRSA
  • Confirm that you have an active Steering Group helping to lead your RRSA work

Attach the following documents to your email:

  • Action Plan for Silver
  • School Questionnaire Summary spreadsheet
  • School Context Data form

9. When you have submitted your Bronze documents

Once you have submitted your documents, your Professional Adviser will look through them and let you know if they have any questions.

If everything is in order, your Professional Adviser will award your school at Bronze: Rights Committed. You will be notified of this by an email from your Professional Adviser, followed by an email from the RRSA office which will contain a link to the Bronze: Rights Committed logo. A printed certificate will also be posted to you.
