Forced to interrupt her studies at university, she became a social worker with Plan International when she arrived at the Ura refugee camp in the Benishangul-Gumuz region of Ethiopia. A difficult but meaningful mission for Ruaa: \u201cMost of the children, they have a trauma because of the sounds of guns during the war in Sudan,\u201d says Ruaa. \u201cSo, most of children here at night, they start screaming. Like they, they remember the sound of guns.\u201d In the Child-Friendly Space (CFS) supported by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Grunfos Foundation and the Lego Foundation, she works with children who have often been traumatised by the violence of war. Here, they benefit from educational and recreational activities and, if necessary, psychosocial support. \u201cWhen they are coming here, we try, as social workers, to make a safe environment for the children,\u201d continues Ruaa. \u201cWe are playing with them, we chat with them, speaking with them. Playing is very important for the children. They make new relationship with other children. Playing makes their mental health better. It's very big. When I saw children who came with a trauma. He can't sit with other children. He can\u2019t smile. And, after days when we are playing with him or when we\u2019re speaking with him, he starts playing, smiling a little bit, I feel successful. Like, it's my job to make him feel better.\u201d \u201cI wish to every child to resume their education, to resume their lives, and to live in safety and in peace,\u201d concludes Ruaa.
