Famine in East Africa: 5.5 million children in danger

Right now, across East Africa, drought, war and lack of food mean millions of children and their families are facing starvation. More than 880,000 children are severely malnourished and desperately need immediate life-saving food. Without this help, one in five of these children could die.

The scale of the food crisis is staggering for children

When famine is declared, it means four children out of every 10,000 die every day because of a lack of food. Famine has been declared in parts of South Sudan, where more than 270,000 children are already suffering from severe malnutrition, and Somalia is also on the brink of famine. We must act now to save as many children’s lives as possible.

Children in Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda are also facing severe food shortages, with more than 3 million children struggling to survive. Without enough food and clean water, children’s lives are in extreme danger – we need your help.

How will my donation help children?

Unicef is already working for children in East Africa every day. Our teams are on the ground, providing vulnerable children in even the most remote areas with the life-saving food and clean water they desperately need to survive. We are also working with our partners across East Africa to support the training of health workers to identify and treat cases of severe malnutrition.

Without our work to prevent malnutrition and to protect children’s health, many more children could be affected by this famine. We’re doing everything we can to help children and families in East Africa. But with so many children in desperate need of life-saving food, we urgently need your help.

Donating by phone

If you’re in the UK and would prefer to make a donation to our East Africa Famine appeal by phone, you can call our dedicated donation line: 0800 158 3752

You can help us save lives. Please donate today and help us reach more desperately hungry children across East Africa.

For the first 12 months monthly donations made to this appeal will go to children affected by the East Africa famine crisis. After that they will go to our Children’s Emergency Fund. In the unlikely event that the funds raised exceed Unicef’s funding requirements for this appeal, your one off or monthly gift will also go to the Children’s Emergency Fund.
