Child marriage is a serious violation of child rights. Every year, around 12 million girls worldwide are robbed of their childhoods, marrying before the age of 18.

Four ways child marriage destroys futures:

  1. It ends education and dreams as many children, especially girls, are pressured to leave school to care for their families, losing their chance to shape their futures.
  2. It puts their health at serious risk. If a child becomes pregnant, she faces a much higher risk of complications, such as miscarriage and stillbirth, and developing serious long-term health conditions.
  3. It exposes children to domestic violence. Girls who are married before turning 18 are more likely to experience physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.
  4. It damages mental health, as child brides are often cut off from their support systems. This isolation, along with abuse, can lead to emotional distress that lasts a lifetime.

We need to take action now to stop this harmful practice. Will you join the global effort to help end child marriage?

What UNICEF is doing to help?

With the help of our partners and supporters, UNICEF is investing in programmes like Advika, which challenge harmful gender norms and advocate for legal reforms.

Initiatives like this empower girls through education, leadership training, and community engagement. So far, Advika has reached 2.5 million young people, declared over 11,000 villages child marriage-free, and prevented approximately 950 child marriages in 2022 alone.

While progress has been made, it remains uneven across the world. The challenges ahead are still enormous, and millions of girls remain at risk. We’re also calling on all governments to put clear laws in place that ban child marriage and protect every child’s right to attend and complete school. Through education, young girls can learn important life skills that prepare them to make informed choices and build supportive networks.

Please donate today and join the growing movement to end child marriage.

Your donation will support UNICEF’s vital work to protect children around the world, wherever a child’s right to a happy, safe, and healthy childhood is threatened. Thank you.
