Children and families in Afghanistan are in severe need of aid
People across Afghanistan have endured floods, earthquakes and plummeting winter temperatures in unheated homes.
In addition to the ongoing challenges, flash floods in 2024 have further exacerbated the situation in Afghanistan, affecting thousands of children and families and heightening the urgent need for support in these devastated regions.
It is expected that severe and unpredictable weather events will increase due to the impact of climate change. This has severe knock-on effects on infrastructure and agriculture, further contributing to displacement.
We need your support more than ever. Please donate to our Afghanistan appeal today.
Support our Afghanistan appeal to provide urgent protection and assistance now
Afghanistan was already one of the toughest places on earth to be a child. Right now, the situation is desperate.
Several challenges have collided to create an unprecedented humanitarian emergency:
- Political instability
- Earthquakes
- Economic crisis
- Drought
- Epic-prone diseases
Approximately 23.7 million people, including 12.3 million children across Afghanistan urgently need humanitarian assistance.
How is UNICEF supporting children in Afghanistan?
More recently, during September 2024, we were able to support children and families in Afghanistan in the following ways:
- More than 6 million people accessed essential health and nutrition services at UNICEF-supported health facilities.
- To prepare and respond to a cholera outbreak, 15,987 health posts were equipped with zinc and oral rehydration solution (ORS) supplies.
- 50 schools in 10 provinces gained access to safe water, handwashing facilities, and newly constructed or rehabilitated latrine blocks benefiting 35,675 students.
- 198,525 pregnant women received multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS) during antenatal care services at health facilities.
- 442,025 children and caregivers accessed prevention and response child protection services.
