Help us reach families affected by the earthquake in Afghanistan

Last updated: 2 September 2025

A powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake in Eastern Afghanistan has killed more than 800 people and injured more than 2,000, with these figures expected to rise.

Families are in urgent need of support. Whole villages have been flattened, and rescue efforts are being held up by landslides.

Local UNICEF teams are working to deliver urgent, life-saving support to children and families, including medical services and clean water.

We must act quickly to support children and families affected by this earthquake. Please donate to our Afghanistan appeal today.

Support our Afghanistan appeal to provide urgent protection and assistance now

Afghanistan was already one of the toughest places on earth to be a child. Right now, the situation is desperate.

In recent years, a series of overlapping crises created a devastating humanitarian emergency in Afghanistan.

  • Political instability
  • Earthquakes and landslides
  • Economic crisis
  • Drought
  • Epidemic-prone diseases

Children often face the harshest consequences of these crises. Approximately 22.9 million people, including 12 million children across Afghanistan, need urgent humanitarian assistance. We must do what we can to help restore hope to a generation of children in Afghanistan.

How is UNICEF supporting children in Afghanistan?

As well as responding in emergencies, we work with communities to help build long-term resilience.

When a devastating earthquake struck Afghanistan in 2023 — claiming nearly 1,500 lives — we responded immediately with emergency support, including health care, clean water, and temporary shelter. We also worked with our partners to restore water systems, schools, and health services — to help communities recover and rebuild for a better future.

In 2025 alone, we are:

  • Helping over 19.3 million people access essential health services.
  • Screening 1.3 million children for wasting — a disease caused by acute malnutrition.
  • Reaching 738,032 people with access to safe drinking water across eight provinces.

We need your help to continue providing essential, life-saving supplies to the children who need them most. Please help us provide relief and support to children in Afghanistan. Donate today.
