Donate to help us reach more children and families in Myanmar

Last updated: 17/04/25

Earthquakes in Myanmar have had a devastating impact on children and families.

It is the most powerful earthquake to strike Myanmar since 1912. At least 3,600 people have died and over 5,000 are injured – many of them children.

The earthquake aftershocks have damaged or destroyed almost 50,000 homes. Many families are now sleeping outside, exposed to extreme heat and rain, which makes children particularly vulnerable to mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria.

We are working with our partners to provide access to safe water, hygiene kits, tents, vaccines, and medical care, as well as safe spaces for children and families.

We supplied 80 tonnes of emergency supplies within the first week of the earthquake, and a second delivery of life-saving supplies arrived in Yangon on 12th April, with more to follow.

What is happening in Myanmar?

Myanmar’s National Disaster Management Committee has declared a state of emergency in the 6 earthquake-affected areas of Mandalay, Sagaing, Magway, Shan State, Naypyidaw, and Bago. The committee has requested international humanitarian assistance.

Since the earthquakes hit Myanmar, it’s estimated that 9.1 million people, including 2.7 million children, live in the worst affected areas across 58 townships. With the country now in its fourth year of escalating conflict, millions of children are living in fear, displacement, and poverty.

The devastation caused by the earthquakes has worsened an already dire situation in Myanmar, further adding to the urgent needs of children.

How to help children in Myanmar?

The best way to help Myanmar and the children in crisis is by supporting our appeal. As the situation continues to evolve, our teams are responding in affected areas, working closely with UN agencies, partners and local communities to assess the situation and mobilise immediate response.

Monthly gifts help us and our partners respond quickly to emergencies and support long-term recovery.

£5 could provide 1,786 water purification tablets to purify water.
£10 could provide life-saving therapeutic food for a child for a week.

How is UNICEF supporting children and families in Myanmar?

We were the first humanitarian support organisation to land a flight with vital life-saving supplies in Myanmar for children and families following the earthquake. This included emergency health kits, medical supplies, tents, and recreation kits, to be transported to the affected areas. We continue working with our partners to provide more life-saving supplies.

These are some of the ways we are urgently responding, but we need your support to protect more children:

  • We are reaching over 350,000 people with water purification tablets and almost 165,000 people with hygiene kits.
  • 60,000 gallons of safe water have been delivered to help 28,000 people in the affected areas.
  • over 250,000 people are being supported through the supply of emergency health kits and other essential supplies.
  • 2,738 households have received cash transfers, benefiting around 13,690 children and adults.
  • 5,000 essential learning supply kits are being supplied to partners in the northwest to support children’s continuous learning.
  • 1,300 people have been reached with mental health and psycho-social support services.

We urgently need your help. With your donations we can continue to support children in Myanmar.
