Guidance for antenatal and postnatal conversations

Home > Further Guidance on Implementing the Standards > Guidance for antenatal and postnatal conversations

This range of signature sheets and accompanying conversations guidance is designed to support staff who are talking to mothers about feeding and caring for their baby, both during pregnancy and in the postnatal period.

The signature sheets are intended to replace the old antenatal and postnatal checklists and Having meaningful conversations with mothers will provide staff with background information. An additional resource is our new Building a happy baby leaflet for parents, which can be used as a basis for a conversation with a pregnant woman or new mother.

The intention is to encourage more mother-centred care and get away from a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Where the current checklists are an integral part of the handheld records, they can still be used to record that discussions have taken place. Eventually it is envisaged that record keeping will be updated to reflect the new guidance sheets.

These resources have to be of use in day-to-day practice and so we would encourage health professionals to download and use these sheets as part of their conversations with parents.
