UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative’s response to the National Maternity Review
The UK Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF UK) Baby Friendly Initiative welcomes the UK Government’s national investigation into NHS maternity and neonatal services in England.
This review is a vital step toward addressing long-standing systemic issues in maternity care and ensuring that every woman and baby receives safe, high-quality and compassionate care. We particularly welcome the creation of a new task force made up of parents and experts.
We are deeply moved by the courage of the bereaved families who have come forward to share their painful experiences. Their voices must remain central throughout this process.
UNICEF UK’s Baby Friendly Initiative is committed to supporting services to improve outcomes for mothers, babies and families – helping to ensure care is responsive, respectful and underpinned by evidence. We recognise the critical importance of equitable access to high-quality care, and of a well-supported and valued maternity and neonatal workforce in achieving lasting change.
UNICEF UK stands ready to contribute and support reforms to help ensure every child has the best start in life, no matter who they are or where they live.
