The Baby Friendly programme includes standards for maternity, health visiting, neonatal units, children’s centres and universities. You can find out more about the different standards and accreditation processes in the links below. The current standards were developed in 2012 following an extensive consultation process. Information on the old maternity and community standards is available on the History section of our website. The transition to the new standards document provides guidance on moving from the old standards to the new for facilitates currently working towards or maintaining Baby Friendly accreditation.
Guidance on implementing the Baby Friendly Initiative standards in children's centres is now available, along with an action plan template and a sample policy.
Facilities implement the standards in stages over a number of years. At each stage they are externally assessed by UNICEF UK. When all the stages are passed they are accredited as Baby Friendly. Baby Friendly accreditation can make a real difference in your hospital.
Donations to UNICEF UK do not fund the Baby Friendly Initiative, the expenses of the Baby Friendly Initiative are covered by the costs of training and assessment. No element of profit for UNICEF or the baby friendly initiative is included in these costs. © 2010 UNICEF UK.
