Implementing the standards

This resource provides in-depth guidance on the Baby Friendly university standards and how to achieve Baby Friendly accreditation for midwifery and health visiting programmes.

The university accreditation programme is designed to ensure that newly qualified midwives and health visitors are equipped with the basic knowledge and skills they need to support breastfeeding and relationship building effectively.

Baby Friendly Initiative accreditation is awarded to an individual course, not to the university itself. Universities are welcome to apply for accreditation for each of the courses they provide for the training of midwives or health visitors/public health nurses.

Our audit tool for universities supports university programmes working towards the standards.

Visit our university accreditation pages for further information on starting your university’s journey to Baby Friendly accreditation. For any questions, please contact the Baby Friendly office
